Following the full-scale invasion and occupation of Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaev chose not to resign from his position. However, on June 28, 2022, he was abducted by the Russian military, and since then, his family has been unable to establish contact with him.

According to reports from released civilians, Ihor was initially held in Kherson, then transferred to Hola Prystan, and subsequently to Kalanchak. The latest information suggests that he is currently detained in Chaplynka.

Prisoners who have encountered Ihor Kolykhaev describe his physical condition as severely deteriorated: he appears sick, weak, emaciated, and exhausted. He is reportedly deprived of adequate food and others are prohibited from sharing food with him. Furthermore, his captors fail to provide him with warm clothing or necessary medication.
